Depression

At one point or another, everyone feels guilt, anger, distress and vulnerability after the loss of a job. All are natural and healthy feelings along the path to recovery. Trying to ignore or suppress emotions does not work, nor does trying to deaden the pain with alcohol or drugs. Suppression of feelings generally manifests itself in a physical problem, like a cold or flu that doesn't seem to fade.

Job loss can shatter our self-concept with deep and lasting effects if we don't give ourselves time to grieve and heal. The healing process includes:

  • Reliving the experience with people who can empathize through group sessions, workshops, or a counsellor
  • Talking about how the experience has affected you
  • Listening to what others remember and feel from similar experiences
  • Reducing guilt, blame, and anger to a balanced perceptive
  • Giving-up the victim mindset and forgiving those who may have caused you pain
  • Developing a short statement about the incident to offer when people ask
  • Enduring until a new job is found
  • Learning useful life lessons from the experience
